How to create your own nail salon experience at home
If a regular manicure and pedicure was an enjoyable part of your wellbeing routine, now's the time to embrace a DIY approach and re-create the ultimate salon experience from the comfort of your home.
Keep your nails looking great and your spirits high during this iso-period with Mavala, a conscious Swiss company who specialise in the care and beauty of nails.
Mavala is 100% cruelty-free, and do not test any of their ingredients or products on animals.
Prep Your Nails
1. Start by removing your nail polish.
We LOVE Mavala Crystal Nail Polish Remover.
It is eco-friendly, acetone-free odourless, and removes nail polish without harming your nails or skin.
Suitable for all nails, including brittle and fragile nails.
Don't forget to wash your hands with soap and water after to remove any residue.
2. Clip and file your nails into shape.
3. Coat the cuticles in Mavala Cuticle Oil to maintain the softness of the cuticles.
This vegan cuticle oil contains natural oils and is free from formaldehyde, phthalates, sulfates and parabens.
After you have coated the cuticles, leave the hands and feet to soak in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. Once the cuticles are soft, gently push them back with a cuticle stick and carefully trim any excess skin.
4. Give your hands and feet a relaxing scrub.
A hand and foot scrub elevates the DIY mani and pedi experience at home.
It is luxurious, relaxing and makes a huge difference to the end result.
Olieve & Olie Salt Scrub is a natural Australian-made scrub that will leave your skin renewed and glowing.
Apply a Base Coat
Don't skip this step!
A base coat not only protects the nails from polish, but it also separates the nail from coloured pigments to prevent discolouration of the nails. It also provides an improved surface for your nail polish to hold on to.
Chill for a few minutes while the base coat dries.
We love that Mavala Super Base for Nail Polish is free of parabens, toluene, formaldehyde and other nasties that are typically added to nail products.
Apply Your Nail Colour
Here's the fun part.
Pick your colour of choice from Mavala's toxic-free and cruelty-free Mini Color Nail Polish Collection.
Mavala polishes provide a long-lasting, gorgeous colour, while allowing you to wear polish all the time because your nails can breathe naturally.
With 28 colours to choose from, the hardest part is picking your favourite shade.
If you're like us and you can't decide on your favourite colour, why not go for a rainbow manicure, where you paint all of your nails a wildly different colour or you can create a subtle gradient with different shades from within the same colour family.
You can view the full range here.
1. Apply the first coat of colour
Load just enough nail colour onto the brush to cover the nail in one coat. Be sure to get the brush all the way down to the cuticle and into the corners of the nail.
Wait 2 minutes for this coat to dry. Set your phone timer if you need to, so that you aren't tempted to rush this step.
2. Apply your second coat of colour
After the 2 minutes are up, apply your second coat of colour. Remember to load the brush with just enough colour to apply a thin coat to the entire nail.

Finish with a top coat
A top coat stops your manicure from chipping and prolongs the life of your manicure.
It also adds a gorgeous shine to your nails.
Clean up any rough edges and let your nails dry
Tidy up any wobbly edges by wrapping in a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover around the cuticle stick and carefully trace around your nails.
Let your nails dry fully and enjoy your amazing DIY manicure or pedicure.
