Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Côte d’Ivoire, scoring a decisive goal in the 90th minute to secure a 1-0 victory against Ecuador in their opening match of Group E.
Diallo’s first-time finish from a cross by Wilfried Singo marked Côte d’Ivoire’s first World Cup win against a South American team, ending Ecuador’s impressive unbeaten streak of 19 matches.
This victory also highlighted the exceptional performance of 19-year-old Yan Diomande, propelling the Ivorians to level points with Germany, who had earlier dominated Curacao with a score of 7-1.
The youthful Ivorian squad, the youngest at this World Cup, appeared to be struggling to find their rhythm until Singo made a crucial run up the right flank. His precise cross found Diallo, who skillfully directed the ball into the bottom left corner, giving the West African nation a remarkable start in their first World Cup finals appearance since 2014.
Ecuador created their best opportunities during the first half, taking advantage of Côte d’Ivoire’s lack of focus in defense. Both John Yeboah and Alan Minda hit the crossbar in the 23rd and 30th minutes, respectively.

Despite this, Côte d’Ivoire maintained better possession, with Diomande proving to be a constant threat on Ecuador’s left side. In the 35th minute, he received the ball at midfield, outpaced Piero Hincapié, and delivered a cross that set up Nicolas Pépé, whose attempt was blocked as he tried to adjust for a better angle.
Just before halftime, Singo nearly executed a stunning bicycle kick following a cross from Guéla Doué.
Côte d’Ivoire began the second half strong, but it was Ecuador’s Gonzalo Plata who brought Yahia Fofana into action with a well-hit shot in the 68th minute, which Fofana saved comfortably.

Prior to that, Diomande continued to shine. In the 52nd minute, his cross found Elye Wahi, but Wahi’s first-time shot skimmed the bar. Moments later, after switching to the left flank due to tactical changes in the 56th minute, Diomande weaved through Yeboah, Alan Franco, and Moises Caicedo, but his shot went over the target.
The match took place within close proximity to over 600,000 Ecuadorian Americans residing in New York and New Jersey, where La Tricolor supporters created a vibrant atmosphere, but ultimately left feeling disappointed.
